If you are thinking about getting goats you need to decide on shelter and bedding you will use for them. here is what we use and love it!. I read about "deep bedding", but didn't really understand it. i thought that was what i was doing, but it wasn't working for me. after several weeks of having the goats in the barn during kidding and milking season, the stalls would get full of poop and soggy with urine and the barn would get that unpleasant ammonia smell..
Goats that are healthy and dry can take amazing amounts of cold. we had goats in interior alaska where it got -50 for several weeks every winter. when the land starts drying out, we take all the bedding out and add it to the homemade composters along with what was removed during the winter.. Ventilation, barn design, frequent bedding changing/cleaning, proper stall management, as well as weather, influence bacteria levels and the prevalence of environmental mastitis and other illnesses. bedding materials, especially those that are organic materials, are hosts for environmental pathogens..
